# Vocab Diet: Reshaping the Vocabulary of LLMs via Vector Arithmetic > Vocab Diet builds compositional vocabularies for language models: instead of a separate token for every word form (walk, walked, walking, Walk), words are composed from a shared base word and transformation vectors (walked = walk + past tense), at both input and output. Paper by Yuval Reif, Guy Kaplan and Roy Schwartz (The Hebrew University of Jerusalem), Findings of ACL 2026. ## Key results - The GPT-4 tokenizer has 24.6k English whole-word tokens; ignoring case leaves 17.7k, and grouping inflections and derivations leaves 14.3k base words (42% fewer). The same bases and transformations can compose 98k further English words. - LLMs interpret composed embeddings (base + transformation vector) as the intended word, especially for inflections and capitalization, including many out-of-vocabulary words (Patchscopes, Llama-3.1-8B; also Arabic, German, Russian, Spanish). Derivations mostly fail. - Existing models can be adapted to a compositional vocabulary with a frozen backbone (transformation vectors plus LoRA on the last 8 layers) removes ~10k tokens from Llama-3.1-8B and OLMo-2-7B and 7.8k from Qwen2.5-7B; English downstream average 66.9 → 65.9 for Llama-3.1-8B; decoding 0.8% slower. - Reallocating the 10k freed slots to Arabic, Russian, German and Spanish (2.5k each) improves bytes per token by 9.3% on average at the same vocabulary size. - Pretraining 124M models from scratch with a compositional vocabulary needs ~42% fewer vocabulary entries. English: the same words as GPT-2's BPE vocabulary with 41.6% fewer entries, so tokenization is unchanged (bits per byte 1.08 vs 1.09). Spanish: 41.8% fewer entries plus composed out-of-vocabulary words, improving compression from 4.77 to 4.92 bytes per token at higher bits per byte (1.00 vs 1.11). - Across 13 models, morphology is encoded less linearly in embeddings as English vocabulary size grows. ## Links - [Project page](https://vocabdiet.github.io/) - [Paper (ACL Anthology)](https://aclanthology.org/2026.findings-acl.1618/), DOI 10.18653/v1/2026.findings-acl.1618 - [arXiv 2510.17001](https://arxiv.org/abs/2510.17001) - [Code](https://github.com/schwartz-lab-NLP/VocabDiet) - Related: [CoBPE](https://co-bpe.github.io/) (COLM 2026), which attaches articles, prepositions and punctuation to base tokens. ## Citation ```bibtex @inproceedings{reif-etal-2026-vocab, title = "Vocab Diet: Reshaping the Vocabulary of {LLM}s via Vector Arithmetic", author = "Reif, Yuval and Kaplan, Guy and Schwartz, Roy", booktitle = "Findings of the {A}ssociation for {C}omputational {L}inguistics: {ACL} 2026", month = jul, year = "2026", address = "San Diego, California, United States", publisher = "Association for Computational Linguistics", url = "https://aclanthology.org/2026.findings-acl.1618/", doi = "10.18653/v1/2026.findings-acl.1618", pages = "32334--32352" } ```
